Greg, this is a sweet model. Thank you... we sort of hacked together something like this and it took us a few months to arrive at the notion of the different stages of engagement + lifecycle, but your visual depiction of it made it all so much clearer.

Woulda saved me a lot of time up front, i'll tell you that much...

Thanks, keep up the great work.

Ben -

It's certainly a challenge, and approaches vary wildly from project to project. I'm happy to brainstorm around a real-world example if you like...either here in the comments or as another post or even privately.

If I had to invent rules-of-thumb, I'd say expose the full member experience early, then require as little action as possible to convert potential to active users.

I know that's not terribly useful, and I plan on posting more about this soon with examples. Thanks for stopping by and for the question.

Very interesting. The "how to get a naked user engaged" problem is one I've been wrasslin' with for 10+ years as an amatuer, and never found quite a good solution for in various projects.

Are there some good "this usually works"/"this usually does not work" points you could list out as far as new user engagement strategies?

Greg:
Brilliant model, well presented! This illuminates a critical blind spot in the thinking of many an engineer. I look forward to future installments.
