What is two factor authentication and why do you need it?

Two factor authentication is also known as multi-factor authentication. It is an extra layer of security that requires not only your username and password, but also something that you have with you. That second layer of security can come in many forms, the most common being a text message, a mobile app, or a hardware token (like a USB drive). It is necessary in today’s world, because account compromises and internet fraud is an everyday occurrence.

Even if you think you have a strong password, it is simply not enough to keep the bad guys out. Text messaging two factor authentication is not recommended either. There are many different ways for bad actors to compromise your phone company. Nexxtep recommends a mobile app or hardware token to provide the two factor service. It’s something that you have in your hand and you have control over. While this concept may seem as a hindrance, it’s been around for so long that it’s really easy to use. It’s not a disruption to your day-to-day work like you think it may be, and it provides peace of mind knowing that your data is protected to the fullest extent possible.
